Summer is the ideal time of year for outdoor living. It’s finally the time when we can break out of winter hibernation and be outdoors more than being in. Summer also means a season filled with soaking up the sun, afternoon BBQs, and the most fun of all, entertaining. There are many elements that go into creating the ultimate outdoor oasis, especially when entertaining a group – big or small.
Similar to the indoors, comfort is key to creating an outdoor oasis. Either individual oversized Adirondack chairs or a cozy, comfy outdoor sofa would be the perfect spot for afternoon-to-evening entertaining. Load up on colorful pillows in fun prints, like this seasons HOT & Trendy chevron, ikat, and stripes, and your guests may never leave. In any space, comfort is essential in making a space tranquil and inviting.
Along with comfortable seating, a place to dine in an outdoor setting is equally essential for the exterior. From a long outdoor farmhouse table to a large round table set for 6, a place to serve, then sit and chat for hours is a must for day-into-night conversation. Dress up the outdoor table with colorful linens, dishes, and of course, colorful and whimsical flowers from the garden.
To take the party from day into night, accent lighting for your outdoor oasis will be needed to create the ideal ambiance. My favorite simple solution are white glistening Christmas lights or solar powered string lights that can be hung from trees, a trellis, an open outdoor table umbrella, or tall corner posts (something that I’m in the process of adding to my deck). If you’re starting from scratch to create an outdoor space, lighting along footpaths and accent lighting on the house and/or gardens, can keep your guests safe from possible falls and create a soft glow on the beautiful outdoor space. Lastly, a collection of glowing candles around your outdoor area will complete the look for your a fun entertaining spot.
An outdoor chandelier can also be a gorgeous focal point.
As much as it’s great to soak up the sun, the Summer heat can often be intense. During those afternoon hours of strong rays, be sure to offer much-needed coverage from the heat. Create an outdoor oasis that may be covered under a grouping of trees, or shelter your guests from the sun by adding a large outdoor umbrella or a grouping of smaller umbrellas. A trellis, canopy, or awning would also be the perfect solution to beat the extreme summer sun.

To drink and to hear. Water is essential. Pitchers of water with fresh mint and/or lemon is a must for outdoor Summer parties. Additionally, a water feature and/or fountain also is the perfect element to creating a tranquil and relaxing outdoor space. There is just something about the sounds of water that simply bring you to the next level. Either within the garden or a plug-in style, your guests will certainly find peace with a water feature.
Flowers and plants signify the warm months. Can you imagine an outdoor space during the Summer without? I don’t have a green thumb at all (so take my advice lightly), but I have found purchasing perennials (instead of annuals) makes the most sense because they’ll return season after season. At my home, I like to plant perennials in pots to add color to the patio and deck, then transplant them to the garden so I can see their pretty colors the following year. To me perennials make more sense and are a better value.
Similar to styling accessories and accents indoors, the same rule of thumb applies – add a variety of flowers and plants in varying colors and heights. This will give your garden and/or pots interest and dimension. To keep them going strong throughout the summer, be sure to water, water, water so their root system can be established.
Entertaining is fun, but especially when the sun is out and it can be outdoors. These 5 essential tips, along with great food, friends, and some jazzy tunes, will absolutely create the ultimate Summer entertaining haven.
